CENTRAL VISAYAS REGIONAL ECONOMIC SITUATIONER

SUMMARY
Preliminary indicators of the performance of the regional economy in the first semester of 2011 suggest that the region was able to sustain the growth momentum realized in 2010. Although the region's export sector appeared to have experienced a set back, many of the region's leading industries performed well in the first half of 2011.
These include the tourism industry, the transportation industry, the business process outsourcing industry, and the construction industry. Even agriculture, which has been incurring losses in production since 2009, manifested signs of recovery during the period.
The sustained growth of the regional economy made a positive impact on the labor market. The employment rate hovered above the 93.5 per cent level in the first half of 2011. Despite this development in the labor market, however, rising underemployment rate remains a challenge for Central Visayas. In the April and July rounds of the Labor Force Survey (LFS), the region's underemployment rate was estimated to be 17.1 per cent and 18.8 per cent, respectively.
Meanwhile, there was an acceleration in the movement of prices of commodities in Central Visayas. Still, the 4.1 percent inflation rate of the region in the first semester of 2011 was considered manageable and within the plan target of the government.
